Screen Cast

Teachers are increasingly expected to create or adapt online learning activities, with or without specialist technical support. Software is all around us at modern workplaces. Given that as a fact, it is natural that there is a huge demand for teaching the usage of software and software systems. Searching for methods to teach users, there are numerous models. We strongly believe that for educating users of software, Screen Casts (SCs) can be a very enhancing experience.
The accessibility of a digital object is defined by its format. The format is the technical specification that makes up the container for the object’s content. If the container is not supported by the surrounding infrastructure (e.g. the operating system, Web browser or software program), the object cannot be viewed in the way the producer intended to. This is especially true for video objects or animated objects. The Shockwave Flash® (SWF) format, as common export format for SCs, is a good example. Any SWF object needs an infrastructure on the local computer. This is the so called Flash (Browser) Plug-in (Adobe, 2008) (if the SWF file is viewed via a Web browser) or Flash (Standalone) Player. Without this additional software, the content of the object cannot be viewed because the operating system cannot read the object’s format. To ensure accessibility, we therefore have to make sure that the target group of users for a specific object has the necessary infrastructure to access the object’s contents as we intended. Given the penetration of the SWF Player for mature markets with over 90% (Adobe, 2008), we can say the SWF format is accessible for most users.
